Strap your palpitating heart into your chest and slap on some protective shorts, kids — The O Music Awards are coming back on June 19th, complete with a passel of prizes, 24 hours of live music, a day-long drum-a-thon in Times Square kicked off by Questlove, and, for the first time ever, our brand-new Make A Band Famous category.

It’s been almost one year since the last O Music Awards burst onto the scene — doling out awards for everything from Must-Follow Artist on Twitter to Best Web-Born Artist and breaking the Guinness World Record for the most live shows in 24 hours with The Flaming Lips in the process. Over the last 12 months we’ve been busy scheming and dreaming up our fourth O Music Awards, and now we think it high time to tear off the wrapping and let you see the goods.

On June 19th at 8pm ET/5pm PT, we’ll be hosting a 24-hour “Live Music Day” from O Music Awards HQ in Times Square, featuring live music performances from around the country. More than 50 bands will be showcased during the 24-hour period.

Specifically, the show will feature The Roots band leader and drummer Questlove, who will kick off a 24-hour-drum-a-thon that will serve as the heartbeat for “Live Music Day.” In the coming weeks, performing artists and venues, along with drummers, will be announced.

Over the course of the show, naturally, we will also be giving out awards. And what awards they are… Allow us to give you a taste of the honors to come: Returning categories will include
The Digital Genius Award,
Fan Army FTW,
Best Web-Born Artist,
Must Follow Artist on Twitter,
Best Music App,
Too Much Ass For TV
and Best Artist Instagram.

On the totally novel side, we have:
Next Big Scene, which recognizes emerging genres and music trends; Most Inspiring Fan Outreach, honoring musicians who are leveraging digital platforms in innovative ways to reach their fans; and Analog Genius, honoring artists who are using old technology in groundbreaking ways. On May 16, the complete list of categories and nominees will be revealed and voting will kick off via OMusicAwards.com.

In the meantime, we’re extremely excited to tell you about one of our most ambitious new categories yet: The Make A Band Famous Award, a kind of nouveau battle of the band effort in which we’ll ask up-and-coming bands’ fans to help them make it to the big time. We’ll start off with 10 nominees — sourced via committee and the MTV Artists Platform — and narrow those down to five during the first phase of voting. Those five will perform during our show on June 19, and compete for a once-in-a-lifetime shot to be featured as part of MTV’s Artist to Watch, VH1’s You Oughta Know, or CMT’s Listen Up music discovery franchises.
